Athena, you're the sort of reader that never misses a thing. I love it when you read my writing! Of course it's also a two edged sword - no lazy work allowed. :D Yep, it's set in the future and was inspired a bit by the movie Children of Men (yes, I make odd connections). I haven't read the book, bu...

A bit of flash fiction* to mark May Day - Beltane Flame

Beltane Flame “Light the fire boy, bach.” The walls of around them glistened with sweat. A tiny spring bubbled from the ancient stone. Bran leaned over the pile. Not quite a bonfire, but more than a cookfire. Since they were poor it was the best they could do. Before he lit the wood he glanced once ...

Marie, looking foreward to your thoughts on Curse of the Golden Flower Heather - you liked it? I thought it was pretty spectacular as well - although my eleven year old found it overly damatic and a little boring. :D He liked the fight scenes though. I think it was a movie essentially about women an...

I think his most poignant/humorous commentary on plot was the immortal character who, out of boredom, decided to insult every being in the universe in alphabetical order. Gotta love the man! Banks btw just delivered an asounding whammie via a brief sideline in part five of chapter four - almost lef...

Your comments on Banks are very perceptive and I tend to agree, although I haven't read his non-genre work. I plan to though. The AU China story sounds intriguing. I'll have to look that one up. At the moment I'm reading Gaiman's and Pratchett's Good Omens which is pretty humorous, if a little too s...

On further consideration it seems a bit like reinventing the wheel to abandon the ovum. I mean after all, the material or catalyst is already there. A same sex male couple could use genetic material from both partners, correct?

You know, I believe I read a discussion very much like this a while ago and it was abandoned after it was declared sexist. But as you both said; moral considerations aside - is this not one of the possible paths for genetically engineering beings capable of living on extra-terrestrial (or non-terres...

Book review - Mainspring by Jay Lake

Not long ago I won a book - an ARC to be exact, in an online contest. The Title is Mainspring and it was given to me by the author, Jay Lake, for writing the silliest bit of fanfic based on his work. I had the dubious distinction of being the recipient of the author's choice award. :D After reading ...

Book review - The Algebraist by Iain M. Banks

I enjoyed The Algebraist tremendously. This is the third SF book I've read by Banks and I've loved each one, for different reasons. Banks plays fast and loose with just about everything in The Algebraist and I tend to think he was channeling Douglas Adams more than not. A couple of times I had to st...

Great lists here. I'll have to look into The Time Machine - I didn't catch it when it came out. Although Iron's Merchant of Venice performance redemed him a bit in my book, I'll never be able to see him as anything but the lecherous jerk who wouldn't leave me alone on a movie set many moons ago. I r...
