Research scientists are nothing if not tenacious, so <a href=\"https:\/\/wwws.whitehouse.gov\/petitions\/#!\/petition\/increase-nih-funding-33-billion-proposed-flat-307-billion-dollars-will-hurt-econmy-and-medical\/FNr0kRbj\">a second round has begun<\/a>. I think this will make it, but it speaks volumes about the US public&#8217;s acceptance\/understanding\/appreciation of biomedical research that scientists can&#8217;t collect 25,000 signatures in a month &#8212; even a shorter one like February.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of tenacity in a more cheerful context, Chris Jones <a href=\"http:\/\/trek.fm\/matter-stream\/2012\/3\/12\/matter-stream-10-extreme-life.html\">recently spoke with me<\/a> on Trek.fm about life in concentric circles, starting with extremophiles on Earth, moving out to Mars, Europa, Titan, Enceladus&#8230; then onto solar systems beyond ours, whether populated by watery Neptunes or super-Earths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first round of the NIH budget petition that I discussed in my previous entry fell 400 signatures short by the deadline.
